The Claim You’ll See Everywhere
Search “Sona Moti wheat” and you’ll find the same set of claims on nearly every site that sells it — low gluten, 12% more folic acid than other grains, low glycemic index, diabetic-friendly. We looked into where these numbers actually come from.
The earliest trace we could find for the folic acid figure is a single unverified mention: an agricultural trust in Bangalore reportedly lab-tested the grain, with no named lab, no published report, and no way to check the result. Every site since appears to have copied the same number forward. That’s not research — that’s one uncited claim, repeated until it started to look like established fact.
So instead of repeating it, here’s what we could actually verify, and what we’re choosing not to claim.
What’s Verified: The Origin Story
Sona Moti is a genuinely ancient wheat variety, historically grown in Punjab. It nearly disappeared as high-yield hybrid varieties — like HD-2967, still grown across most of North India today — took over Indian agriculture from the 1960s Green Revolution onward. Like most native landraces, it isn’t registered as a formal variety, which is also why no large-scale institutional nutrition study has been done on it.
One government-backed source does exist. A Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh — a state-run agricultural extension institution under ICAR — has been working to revive a related variety for natural farming systems. Their Principal Scientist has described the wheat as believed to contain lower sugar content and to be rich in essential nutrients, while stopping short of citing an exact figure. That’s a more credible starting point than the uncited numbers circulating elsewhere, but it’s a qualitative expert statement, not a published lab report.
Researchers have also linked the variety’s origins to the Harappan civilization, connecting it to some of the earliest organized farming in the Indian subcontinent.
Why We Grow It Anyway
Independent of the nutrition debate, Sona Moti earns its place on Gunvantam farmland for reasons we can observe directly, season after season:
- It’s low-input by nature. Its tall, robust plant structure suppresses weeds on its own, so it doesn’t need the chemical inputs modern hybrids often depend on.
- It fits chemical-free farming. Its natural resilience to local Haryana conditions means we don’t need synthetic fertilizer or pesticide to get a healthy crop.
- It’s part of keeping a disappearing gene pool alive. Fewer farmers grow native varieties like this one every year. Every acre we plant keeps the seed line in circulation.
